For many folks, the confrontational attitudes about "combatting," "challenging," "dismantling," and "confronting" racism and bias evoke fear of confrontation, shaming, and blaming that can cause them to withdraw, shut down, or simply not show up for the conversation in the first place. Research on relationship building, however, shows that there are ways to reduce interpersonal bias and grow empathy without making the conversation about race, racism, or discrimination and without anyone needing to fear shame or embarrassment.

Dr. Jo Burkholder Ph.D. believes that positive change happens when everyone has a stake in the outcome. She is an anthropologist and former professor of Gender Studies with 20 years of experience in helping groups understand and create cultural change, move towards equity, and grow inclusive connections. A practiced anti-racist educator and organizer, she has led program development and deployment initiatives for organizations small and large. She is the owner of Terra Firma Cultural and Diversity Consulting supplying sustained and holistic diversity, inclusion and retention solutions for small- to medium-sized organizations.
