Applying Quantum Principles to Improve the Probability of Success in Organizations
    with Joel McGinley

    Overview

Are traditional social science methods incapable of dealing with the complex and indeterminant problems facing management today? It is not so much the wedding of scientific logic and method to management theory and practice that is problematic as it is the outdated models of scientific inquiry that slow our progress. The new sciences of chaos and quantum theory offer valuable metaphors and methods that can challenge management research agenda into the next century. Quantum mechanics as applied to management provides a new logic of complementarity, constructivism, and participatory collusion in organizations and management. The quantum methods outlined and applied are Heisenberg's principle of indeterminism and Born's rules of probabilistic interpretation. Joel will discuss the metaphors and methods of quantum theory and how they may be applied to familiar management issues.

Attendees will come away with a deeper understanding of...

    • How quantum principles can be applied to planning, and team development
    • The importance of belief and focus
    • How applying the Born Rule increases the probability of success
    • How managers can apply these principles to increase the probability of success

Every cause needs money, but not every organization has the knowledge and staff necessary for successful fundraising. Help a nonprofit develop a plan for fundraising success. While this project isabout fundraising, you will not actually do any fundraising. Your role is to help the organization be successful in its fundraising efforts.
Join the 501 Commons Executive Service Corps of Washington, a group of 450 professionals who volunteer to serve nonprofits. 501 Commons has two kinds of opportunities for volunteer consultants in the Catalyst program, a cohort program for six Snohomish County nonprofits, funded by the Greater Everett Community Foundation and United Way of Snohomish County, and for nine King County nonprofits, funded by Boeing.

Do you have planning and facilitation skills? Meet 1-2 times a month from June through year-end to guide an organization through a planning process including an assessment of their development capacity and formation of a tangible action plan. (You do not need to have fundraising expertise.)

Do you have experience with fundraising as a volunteer, consultant, or staff member? Beginning in September, join the planning consultant described above and help the organization develop a fundraising plan and case for funding.
In both of these roles, plan to spend 6-10 hours a month meeting with an organization, pulling out their good ideas, developing project documents, and providing the structure necessary for implementation. You must be able to meet at mutually agreeable times during business hours.

Join the Service Corps, and contact Liz, liz@501commons.org to let us know you are interested in volunteering for Catalyst.

Hi, everyone! I'm excited to launch a new tool on the NCDD website to help you share your success stories in dialogue and deliberation more broadly.

The draft tool is up at http://ncdd.org/storytelling-tool and I encourage everybody to take a look and give the tool a test drive by entering one of your dialogue and deliberation projects!

For a long time now, NCDD has wanted to find a way to collect more stories from our members about their dialogue and deliberation projects. We're working with both the Kettering Foundation and Participedia.net to broaden the reach of your stories -- and give you more incentive to tell us about the great work you're doing!

We've designed the tool to be as simple and streamlined as possible, with few required fields. But if you find that something is missing or confusing in any way, we want to hear about it now so we can improve the tool.

We know how busy you all are, and that it can be hard to finish up one project before diving into the next. We hope this simple tool will help you make a point of reporting (however briefly) on your D&D projects and programs on a regular basis. By partnering with Kettering and Participedia, and by feeding appropriate entries into the NCDD blog and resource center, we're helping you spread the word about what you've been accomplishing and learning.

Kettering is interested in learning more about innovative dialogue and deliberation projects, across a variety of different methodologies. Participedia is interested in learning about more projects so they can potentially build fully formed case studies on them for inclusion in Participedia. Other partners may be added in the future, if they can help broaden our reach.

Let me know what you think of the tool, whether you have any questions, and especially if you have any suggestions!
