Resolving Conflicts during Rapid Change

Wallace Wilkins, Ph.D.

During these rapidly changing times, differences in personality, values, habits and ego can escalate into co$tly conflicts. Many organizational leaders avoid conflicts, hoping they will magically go away. Their preference to avoid conflicts is what permits long-standing disputes to fester. This reduces profit, jeopardizes workplace morale and productivity, impedes service to customers and other stakeholders, and sets the stage for grievances and litigation. These costs are preventable when OD professionals take the initiative to approach and resolve conflicts.

In this interactive workshop, you’ll learn specific steps to resolve your own conflicts, as well as initial steps that can prepare you to mediate conflicts among your supervisees and co-workers:

  • Learn the primary reason why conflicts last so long
  • Identify the two unaddressed issues that underlie most conflicts
  • Engage ornery people in direct dialog
  • Apply the ground rules used by successful mediators
  • Trade retaliatory actions for conciliatory gestures
  • Stay engaged even when you and others become upset
  • Resolve your conflicts without waiting for a mediator to intervene

Wallace Wilkins, Ph.D., serves as clinical psychologist, conflict mediator and leadership coach. He is Master Trainer and Senior Consultant for the Resolution Resource Center. A graduate of the University of Washington, Wally speaks and writes about powerful strategies for individuals and organizations to create low-stress, low-conflict, high achievement. His coaching strategies focus on reducing angry/aggressive/disruptive behavior.

Wally’s workshops have been well-received nationally and internationally. In addition to previous PNODN presentations, he has presented at Global Congresses of the Project Management Institute and World Conferences of the Employee Assistance Professionals Association. Wally has served organizations in Canada, Russia, Ukraine, Chile and Malaysia. For additional information, visit his website at http://www.Take-Risks.com.
